ATAK is the newest kayak available from Wilderness Systems Kayak. ATAK means Advanced Tactical Angling Kayak and has been dubbed the next big thing in kayak fishing.

I had the opportunity over the holiday weekend to take the new Wilderness Systems ATAK 140 out for a test drive. Initially, the ATAK definitely passes the eye test. This kayak looks very sleek and has several features that immediately catch an angler’s eye.

My first impression when I got into the ATAK 140 was how much room was available. It has an open concept which allows for plenty of space to walk or move around while on the water and with the attractive traction pads, it makes you feel very stable. I knew it was going to be a comfortable ride seeing the Air Pro Max seat installed. I’ve experienced this seat on the Wilderness Ride 115 and it is by far the best seat on the market. For me personally, the ATAK 140 is a little long being 14 feet, as I prefer the 12 footers, but it was impressive how fluid and stealthy this kayak was when paddling.

The ATAK 140 was easy to control and even when I moved the seat into the high position, I still felt very balanced. The ATAK 140 had a few new little features that I found very useful. There is a utility tray in the center for all the things you want to keep readily available. I kept a drink bottle, pliers, and fish grips in mine for easy access. The ATAK 140 also features a foam battery and rod holder in the rear storage, and the very large enclosed front storage is great when needing to keep things dry and put away. Also featuring a removable pod (FlexPod OS), it is set up perfectly for those anglers who want to add fish finders/depth finders and other electronics to their kayak. Coming standard with several slide tracks for your accessories, there is still plenty of room to add your own touches to the ATAK 140. Overall, the ATAK 140 is a great kayak and easily fit myself and my 7 year old son with no problems. There are eight great colors to choose from (unfortunately pink is not one of them) and with the MSRP at $1,795 this is a great option for both the novice and the expert angler. It is fully equipped, low profiled, and extremely comfortable to allow for a fun full day on the water.
