As a dad, I truly love any and everything that my sons get for me regardless of the occasion. Here are 3 great gift ideas to give your special pops a huge smile for Father’s Day. To me, there’s nothing better than a quality fishing reel, a great knife to fillet fish with, and great pair of pliers to have while out kayak fishing.

I have been using these pliers myself for a little over a year personally, and I don’t think there’s a better set out there on the market. The grips on the Cuda fishing pliers make holding on to them much easier, even with wet hands. They also cut braid like a knife through soft butter! With a retail price of only $80.49, you’ll definitely catch a huge smile on Father’s Day!

Okuma Fishing – Helios SX

Nothing gets an angler more excited that a new reel. Personally I want a lot out of my fishing reels; performance, tough, and light, just to name a few. I’d been a fan of the Helios reel from Okuma Fishing for several years, and recently got to do some serious testing on the new Helios SX on some 30 plus inch studs on a recent fishing trip. The outcome? I love the SX even more than the original. With a price tag of only $130, you get big time performance without a big time dent to your wallet!

I have always played down Father’s Day to my kids because to me being a father when you are a father is what your supposed to do. So it doesn’t require any special recognition (my personal opinion). No matter how little or large the gift is I super appreciate it. All that being said here are a few ideas for those who want to go the extra distance for their kayak fishing family.

Father’s Day to me is bitter sweet, 4 years ago I lost my Dad to Liver Cancer. We were very close and he taught me everything I know about saltwater fishing. I miss him greatly, but I carry him with me everyday. On the much brighter side I am truly blessed to be the father of two amazing daughters, (Victoria and Veronica), who mean the world to me. I look forward to growing old with them, and nothing thrills me as watching their successes in their lives.  Here are 3 fantastic gift ideas for that special dad in your life.

The Columbia Men’s PFG Terminal Tackle Hoodie, is one of the best products a fisherman can have in his arsenal. Unlike most “sun protecting” shirts the Columbia shirt has a built in hood made of the same sun fighting material just like the rest of the shirt. Sun protection is the name of the game with this epic lightweight fishing hoodie. The shirt is crafted from a breathable, comfortable, and quick drying fabric that is outfitted with UPF50 protection. This bad boy is made with a high neckline to help enhance coverage, and a streamlined hood that is made to fit under a ball cap or sun hat to help with total coverage of your neck, head, and ears. This by far is one of my all-time favorite “sun shirts” I have ever owned, and would make for a special gift for your dad on Father’s Day. The best thing about these Terminal Tackle Hoodies, is that they will not break the bank at only $40.00!

If you are looking for that special gift that kicks the snot out of every other water based shoe out there, then be sure to check out the Astral Filipe! The Filipe is designed to be a sandal or you can convert it quickly over to a flip-flop. Like all of the Astral shoes, they use the ultra-sticky G-Rubber to help your feet grip everything in sight, from wet rock, to slippery boat decks, to slick wood. The sandal is design to have balanced geometry to help you walk with a ton of support, balance, and biomechanically natural lifestyle. The Filipe comes in 3 awesome colors, and whether you’re heading out on town, hitting the water, climbing dunes, or just chilling with friends you cannot go wrong with the Filipe by Astral. I have to admit that I have a slight addiction to these epic sandals, these are absolutely the best shoes that I have ever worn, and coming in at $75, the Filipe will not break the bank.

What father does not like a killer pair of shades? One he can look real cool, but more importantly a pair of polarized sunglasses will save his eyes from harmful UV rays for years to come. The Smith Outlier XL is the perfect gift that keeps on giving, every time he puts them on. The Outlier XL brings all of the features of the Smith DNA into a larger frame style, perfect for medium and large heads alike. Megol nose and temple pads create a comfortable fit, while the option of ChromaPop™ polarized lenses provides the highest level of enhanced color and clarity. This package of oversized style enhanced with performance features is perfect for scaling far-off peaks or catching the first light on dawn patrol fishing adventure. I have owned many pairs of polarized glasses, but I can guarantee you this, nothing out there compares to the comfort and the UV fighting as the Outlier XL does. This is the gift that is always giving, and for $169, that is not too steep to keep dad’s eyes protected for many years.

So if you are in search of a few gift ideas for your special father, then be sure to scope out the few that I have listed above, and if you really want to see him smile from ear to ear give him an Ardent Bolt reel. Not only will he be happy but he may just land a few good fish to bring you home some tasty dinner. The Ardent Bolt is a super-fast and very slick spinning reel with a whopping 6:0:1 ratio to help haul those fish in extremely quickly.

My father isn’t my best friend, but I love him to death. We have had rough patches. We have had months of never speaking. At one time, I hated him. But as he has aged, as I have matured, and as we have found ways to bond, we have gotten close. From shooting oysters by a camp fire to gaffing big bull reds with charter clients, my father and I do a lot together. When we arent shrimping or fishing together, we can be found at his camp site in L and O Pines campground around Covington, Louisiana. Just listen for the Black Sabbath playing and smell the boiling seafood; you can’t miss it!

Guy Harvey Technical Fishing Shirt

A tradition with my father and I for Father’s Day is that I would buy him a Guy Harvey shirt. He and I have been collecting these shirts for over two decades. When I was a young child, he would give me his old ones that had holes in them or stains for me to sleep in. Ever since, when my mother would buy him a new Guy Harvey, she would also buy me one. When I finally started working at 16, I started buying him the shirts every Father’s Day and birthday.

The shirts always mean a lot to us because we are not just fisherman: we have always made our lives on the water in one facet or the other. Between shifts working offshore, my father would operate a shrimp boat, catching and selling thousands of pounds of shrimp a year to factories and families alike. Sadly, I kind of got away from fishing in high school when Dungeons and Dragons and video games took over my life. It wasn’t until I turned 21 that I found myself needing the water again. To this day, my best times fishing are when my father and I get on his big boat and head out to the barrier islands to chase big speckled trout and bull reds.

Shimano Compre Rod

No father worth their salt has enough rods and reels. My father has thousands and thousands of dollars invested in his rods and reels, including older Abu Garcia Ambassadors that, in prime condition, would be worth very serious money. When we are cruising the stores and the Internet and we find a good deal on a new rod, we check it out. Currently, my father has close to 30 rods and reels rigged up for speckled trout, bull reds, or sharks.

The Shimano rods are very light weight, and using the X-Wrap design, have much more strength than other rods. They are made to last. And with a one year warranty, Shimano will take care of most breaks in your rod from factory defects. This however I am not worried about: my father and I have hardly every broken a rod out fishing. We never horse specks over the side of the boat, and use nets or gaffs to get fish in the boat. Pops always told me “take care of your equipment, and your equipment will take care of you.”

Cabela’s Fish Cleaning Station

Image result for cabela's fish cleaning station

Now some people don’t like to keep fish, and that is perfectly fine. If you are into eating your catch, you need a place to filet your fish. When I was 4 years old, my father taught me how to filet a speckled trout with a butter knife. At that young, and with a crappy knife, I was able to fillet a speck down to the bone. He and I each have our own filet stations at our homes, and we regularly dull our knives on the bones and flesh of fish.

One of the coolest things about this filet station is that it has its own little water hose. You will connect your own garden hose to the bottom of the sink, and the small her hose and handle will allow you to clean your station as you filet. I have this set up myself: the legs are very stable and the fittings for the sink and faucet do not leak, as long as you tighten down the gaskets and fittings tight enough. If your dad doesn’t have a dedicated place to filet his fish, this is perfect for him!
